CHORD workshop: ‘Retailing, Architecture and Material Culture: Historical Perspectives’

The Centre for the History of Retailing and Distribution (CHORD) invites submissions for a workshop that explores the architecture, material environmement, objetcs and material culture of retailing and distribution.

Papers focusing on any historical period or geographical area are welcome, as are reflections on methodology and / or theory. We invite both experienced and new speakers, including speakers without an institutional affiliation. Potential speakers are welcome to discuss their ideas with the organiser before submission (please see details below). Some of the themes that might be considered include (but are not limited to):

  • The architecture of shops, markets and retail premises
  • Retailing and distribution ephemera
  • Retail exteriors, displays and interiors
  • The material culture of distribution
  • Fixtures, fittings and packaging
  • The restoration and recreation of historical shops
  • Retailing and town planning
  • Retail premises in the wider environment

Individual papers are usually 20 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. We also welcome shorter, 10 minute ‘work in progress’ presentations, also followed by 10 minutes for discussion.

To submit a proposal, please send title and abstract of c.300 to 400 words, specifying whether you are proposing a 10 or a 20 minute presentation to Prof Laura Ugolini, at l.ugolini@wlv.ac.uk by 2 March 2018.

The workshop will be held in the Mary Seacole (‘MH’) Building, Wolverhampton University City Campus Molineux, a short walk from Wolverhampton’s bus and train stations. Maps and directions are available here.

Chris Peach at the BAIA’s “Light Narratives” Workshop

Chris Peach, principal director of fdcreative, recently gave an introduction to lighting design for interiors called “Ruled of Thumb” to second and third year BA Interior Architecture students, as a part of the “Light Narratives” three week workshop.

The lecture covered issues of design, design with light, practical planning, colour and perception.

Free Range 2017 – Thursday 13th July – Saturday 15th July

Recent graduates from our Interior Architecture (BA Hons) course will be exhibiting their work as a part of Interior Educators at Free Range 2017 , from 13th until 15th July in The Old Truman Brewery.

Part of the exhibition will be dedicatedto the work produced as a part of a Parallel Cities 2, a collaborative project / workshop between students from the Pratt Institute in New York City and the University of Westminster’s Interior Architecture (BA Hons) students, lead by Alessandro Ayuso.

Launch: Thursday 13th July 6-10pm

Exhibition opening times: Friday 14th July – Saturday 15th July, 10am-7pm

Awards+INT.ALK+Bar: Friday 14th July, 7-9pm

Admission is free and the events are open to public.

Summer Skills Academy 2017

Skills Academy 2017 is a series of 40 seminars and workshops arranged by the Career Development Centre, aimed at helping the students find work opportunities and establish a career path.

The sessions are delivered by industry professionals and employers. They will share their knowledge and provide the students with practical advice, to help them prepare for entering competitive jobs market.

This year’s featured employers include Goldman Sachs, CIMA, IBM, Teach First, Brightsparks, The Civil Service, Greggs Plc, The Thinking Revolution, Production Base, Hey Tempo, Shaylor Group, Evolve Integral Ltd, Careercake, The Stephen Lawrence Trust and Aptitude Digital Solutions plus more.

The sessions have started on Monday 22nd May and will run until Monday 5th June across Marylebone, Regents and Cavendish campuses.

Open to all students at all levels and faculties across the University and also graduates and alumni of the past three years.
