Giorgios Malliaropoulos from MArch DS18 to participate in 2022 Sustainability Workshop organised by the Norman Foster Foundation

Congratulations to Giorgios Malliaropoulos, MArch DS18 student, on being selected from hundreds of applicants to be one of ten to participate in the 2022 Sustainability Workshop and represent the University of Westminster.

His interest in sustainability has been proved through his University project last year – ‘’Institute of Ground Tectonics’’ developed while at DS18, under the tutelage of Laura Nica, John Cook, and Ben Pollock. The project is a laboratory for investigating soil structures , sampling analysis and morphological changes in land. Constructed out of a series of innovative aggregate mixtures, the proposal was aiming to minimise the use of material and carbon-intensive materials, materials that would adapt to extreme weather conditions such as drought and storms. This project included complex climatic data gathering, diligent research, Computational fluid dynamics simulations, high standard drawings, and carefully crafted prototypes.

Giorgios is currently finalising his research topic and agenda for the workshop, but he is interested in exploring soil morphologies & the possibility of controlling through design, nutrient concentration for more fertile soils and enhanced agriculture yields.

The Norman Foster Foundation’s Education + Research Programme: 2022 NFF Energy Workshop, April 25-29, 2022 | Deadline for application: February 14, 2022

The Norman Foster Foundation (NFF)’s Education + Research programme is organising the 2022 NFF Energy Workshop, which will take place from 25-29 April 2022 in Madrid, Spain. The workshop aims to bring together international experts and students to explore the development of tools, models and design methods to address global energy challenges, and the role of architecture and design in transforming the use of energy resources.

To this end, the NFF will award ten scholarships to students from the diverse backgrounds of Architecture, Urbanism, Design, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering and Environmental Studies. Grants will cover all transportation and accommodation related to the week-long event in Madrid, Spain.

Open Call: “The Digital X Workshop” by Norman Foster Foundation; Deadline: 4th of November

The Norman Foster Foundation is awarding ten scholarships to participate in the upcoming Digital X workshop to be held at the Norman Foster Foundation headquarters in Madrid, Spain, 18–22 February 2019.

The Digital X workshop, mentored by Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder and former director of MIT Media Lab, will comprise a team of granted scholars drawn from the diverse backgrounds of the digital world, design and architecture.

What happens when the natural world and the artificial world become one and the same? What societal and anthropological changes are triggered when direct brain communications occur among humans, and between humans and machines? The Digital X workshop will focus on this kinship, that of architecture and the digital world, how the two play together now, and how they will change the world together, going forward, discussing things that, outrageous today, will be commonplace tomorrow.

Grants will cover all transportation, accommodation and meals related to the week-long event in Madrid. Scholars will engage with an interdisciplinary Academic Body formed by mentors ranging from the fields of electronics and software engineering to social sciences and art.

Those interested in applying please download the application form here.

Deadline is November 4, 2018 24:00 CET.
