“The making of a photograph is constructing a microworld: it has its own technique, craft and aim. Through this lecture, we will explore thirty-five years in the making.”

Over a period of more than thirty-five years Hélène Binet has captured both contemporary and historic architecture. She is a fervent advocate of analogue photography, working exclusively with film, and a firm believer that ‘the soul of photography is its relationship with the instant’.

Binet’s work has been exhibited in both national and international exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at the Power Station of Art, Shanghai, in 2019. She was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2007 and in 2015 was the recipient of the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Ada Louise Huxtable Prize, awarded to a woman who has made a major contribution to architecture, and is one of the Royal Photographic Society’s Hundred Heroines.

The Landmark Student Art Prize | Deadline: April 19, 2022

Art in Offices are running and organising The Landmark Student Art Prize on behalf of Landmark, one of the country’s biggest providers of flexible office space.

Landmark are about to launch a new space in King’s Cross at The Lighthouse. As a company they have a rich history of investing in and displaying art in their spaces, and this year they have decided to support the creatives of the future by launching this new prize.

As you’ll see from the images of the spaces, which you can see here there is a real mixture of spaces, which is why we want a wide variety of art students to submit their work. We are going to need artworks of all sizes, and we would love to see submissions from artists studying:

  • Painting
  • Illustration
  • Print making
  • Graphic design
  • Print design
  • Textiles
  • Photography
  • Fashion
  • Architecture
  • Ceramics
  • Industrial designers
  • And animation or film students

We are mostly in need of 2D artworks but there are going to be spaces for sculptures, ceramics, lighting design and other 3D practises as well. We encourage the students to submit more than one piece of artwork as well.

There are some great prizes on offer, but not only will there will be prize winners, everyone shortlisted will have their work on display for hundreds of people to see at Landmark Kings cross for 12 months.  PLUS everyone is represented by Art in Offices for 12 months. The prizes for the top 4 winners are:

  • 1. £5,000 Cash Prize
  • 2. £2,000 Cash Prize
  • 3. Art Materials and Tools to the value of £1,000
  • 4. Club Space for 3 months to the value of £400

Asian Architects Association announces photography competition | Deadline: Thursday, January 13, 2022

AAA are excited to be launching their first ever photography competition, which is free to enter and open to all.

AAA would love to have participants from all backgrounds (don’t have to be Asians only) participate in this exciting creative opportunity.  

The theme of the competition is ‘’Joy in Architecture’’ (which doesn’t have to be about Asian culture but could be a wider interpretation).

The pandemic has highlighted the importance of how we live, work and interact with one another; with the use of photography enabling us to relive memories and feel connected but most importantly capturing those special moments.

As we continue to adapt to the new normal, let us celebrate the joy that architecture brings to our daily lives.

AAA are interested to see what joy in Architecture means to you. It could be about buildings, people or capturing moments of the everyday; we are open to all interpretations of the theme.

Podcast: A Small Voice Conversations with Photographers

David Moore is a London based photographic artist once described as belonging to “the second wave of new colour documentary in Britain”. He has exhibited and published internationally and has work held in public and private collections. David has worked as a photographer and educator since graduating from West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham, in 1988. He is currently the Course Leader of MA Documentary Photography and Photojournalism at the University of Westminster. David’s 2017/18 project ‘Lisa and John’ responds to the archive of his influential 1988 graduation project Pictures from the real world – which was published as a book in 2011 – and employs theatre, installation, and collaboration. Lisa and John was launched at Format International Photography Festival in 2017, and included a theatrical play, The Lisa and John Slideshow, written and directed by David. The entire Lisa and John Project was exhibited and performed in London and Belfast in 2018 and received widespread acclaim.

Writer, Sean O’Hagan, wrote:

Moore is such a master of colour that he made me think more than once what William Eggleston’s photographs would have looked like had he been born in the north of England rather than the American south.

David’s current practice addresses agency and a critique of documentary as a genre using installation and theatre as a means posing questions around the production of knowledge through photography.

KSDIY17: Kurt Schwitters ‘DIY’ Summer School, 14th-22nd July in Cumbria

Kurt Schwitters ‘DIY’ Summer School for architects, craft/design artists and art students will take place between 14th and 22nd July 2017 at the Merz Barn site, Elterwater, Cumbria – the site of Kurt Schwitters’ last Merzbau experiment.

“Schwitters’ Merzbau experiments were an important influence on the development of early modern architecture..” (Rem Koolhaas, OMA)

The Summer School will offer creative workshop opportunities*, architectural experiments and construction skills projects located in the dramatic landscapes of the Lake District National Park:

  1. Merzbau Art Museum: design and construction of large scale architectural models as the basis for a future Kurt Schwitters Merzbau art museum; the narratives of Kurt Schwitters’ four Merzbauten projects (1923-48)
  2. New Rural Design and Architecture workshop skills: learn traditional rural craft construction skills – dry stone walling, coppice/benders, and sleeping pods in the orchard;
  3. Traditional scything, hay rope making and hay meadow management: an introduction to the use of the Austrian (light) and English (heavy) scythes; basic scything skills, grass architecture and hay rope making, and basic introduction to hay meadow ecology and management;
  4. Self-directed projects: e.g. in painting, drawing, photography, video, audio arts, and printmaking, etc., are also encouraged.

There is a small gallery and tools store on site, but students are responsible for their own materials, food and cooking arrangements.

*NB the workshops are informal and programmed according to demand. They can also be offered as one or two half day intensives by arrangement so that people can mix.

Fees: £195 including fully equipped bunk barn accommodation (9 nights) and workshops tuition £100 non-bunk barn, free use of camping facilities, showers, etc. on site at the Merz Barn
