SA+C Tutors’ and Students’ Work Featured in Dezeen Magazine: “Architects for Gaza creates fragments of demountable clinic for Gaza”

As a part of the London Festival of Architecture, on June 25, 2024, Architects for Gaza, led by the Senior Tutors Yara Sharif and Nasser Golzari (MArch DS22 and MA Architecture), displayed sections of an experimental clinic in Marylebone Campus that it plans to build in Gaza as soon as soon as the conditions allow for access. The prototype was designed and built in collaboration with the Senior Tutors Paolo Cascone (BSc Architecture and Environmental Design) and François Girardin (Fabrication Lab and MArch DS23) and a number of students from the above courses.

The prototype was on display until the end of June and the exhibition was covered by the Dezeen Magazine:

“On show at the University of Westminster School of Architecture and Cities, the full-scale segments were designed to demonstrate how structures could be built to provide primary care in Gaza where 70 per cent of all health infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed since the most recent escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict in October.

Named Experimental Lab/Clinic, the project by Architects for Gaza was designed by curators Yara Sharif, Nasser Golzari, Francois Girardin and Paolo Cascone to be built using the scarce materials available in Gaza. The clinics would also act as a kind of “atlas of possibilities” to demonstrate construction techniques that people can use to rebuild their homes and neighbourhoods.”

Please join us on Tuesday, 25th of June at 6pm (BST) for the opening of the Gaza Experimental Lab. 

This 1:1 installation is a fragment of an off the grid experimental lab typology for the context of Gaza. It brings to the surface alternative materials and techniques built out of urgency and scarcity, challenging the consumer-driven construction industry, both in UK and the Global south by re-appropriating its discards. The room in its complete form can be used as a healthcare clinic, class room or Home.

The Lab, being ongoing process of testing and making, suggests alternative use of materials including crushed concrete, R-bars, corrugated sheets, sandbags, fired/unfired clay panels and other components. The outcome may suggest a new and unfamiliar aesthetic inspired by the local context and needs.

The exhibition is hosted by University of Westminster, School of Architecture, 25-30 June. Access need assistance available at the reception.

Cultivating Hope: Conversations on Palestinian art and architecture is a series of talks, gatherings and discussions — convened by Unsettled Subjects — aimed at developing an understanding of cultural production and reflection from Palestinian practitioners.

The first event in the series features architects and educators Yara Sharif and Nasser Golzari, founding members of Palestine Regeneration Team and more recently, Architects for Gaza, in conversation with Adam Khan, principal at Adam Khan Architects.

The studio is conceived as a research by design laboratory investigating on performance- oriented architecture; trough the negotiation between multiple social and environmental parameters, the discourse of the studio explores an information-based design process towards an ecological approach to the built environment. This year the Studio will focus of an innovative way of learning from vernacular architecture to generate new architectural ecological typologies. These typologies will respond to the need of housing, health and educational affordable architectures for the African context.

MArch DS22 tutors, Dr Yara Sharif and Dr Nasser Golzari, have been invited to show their recent work Secrets of a Digital Garden at this year’s Berlinale Forum Expanded.

The work consists of a film and an interactive installation, previously exhibited at the Chicago Architecture Biennial 2019.

Secrets of a Digital Garden follows on the duo’s ongoing research by design, which aims to explore the hidden potentials of the Palestinians landscape, and the right to the rural. 
 
The work was produced in collaboration with Riwaq: Centre for Architectural Conservation, and is realised with the fantastic support of UNESCO, University of Westminster, Fabrication Lab, NG Architects, DOEN, Sweden/Sverige and PART.

The exhibition runs from February 19 to March 22.

How can communities outside the Middle East, including diaspora, engage in influencing the decolonization of public space and architecture?

Alongside the exhibition, a panel discussion on the Arab cities of Mosul, Baghdad, Riyadh, Ramallah, Beirut, Damascus and Gaza will take place to unpack their vanishing landscape and the way it is being ‘Dressed and Undressed’. Notions such as Home, re-production, re-construction and re-imagination of space will be interrogated by different researchers through film, drawings and mapping.

The event will be organised by PART and the panel discussion will be led by PhD students and researchers from the University of Westminster and University College London.

Curator Yara Sharif invites guests to explore the concept behind the exhibition, and its importance as an alternative lens into a world of responsive architectural design.

The discussion will address the social and environmental issues of colonisation, where foreign architecture and spatial design can demolish not only functional space, but with it, layers of history, culture, memory and identity.

About the Book

Architecture of Resistance investigates the relationship between architecture, politics and power, and how these factors interplay in light of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. It takes Palestine as the key ground of spatial exploration, looking at the spaces between people, boundary lines, documents and maps in a search for the meaning of architecture of resistance. Stemming from the need for an alternative discourse that can nourish the Palestinian spaces of imagination, the author reinterprets the land from a new perspective, by stripping it of the dominant power of lines to expose the hidden dynamic topography born out of everyday Palestine. It applies a hybrid approach of research through design and visual documentary, through text, illustrations, mapping techniques and collages, to capture the absent local narrative as an essential component of spatial investigation.

YARA SHARIF & NASSER GOLZARI: Subver-City: the Green Urban Lab typology

After the devastating war on the Gaza Strip in 2008-09, which left most of it in ruins, we took up the challenge of trying to think how Gazans could manage to reconstruct their city under such conditions. The presentation discusses the development of a new typology we have called the Green Urban Lab. The Lab explores creative ways to stitch together the fragmented urban landscape using speculative and live projects. In what we call the ‘Absurd-City’ we take advantage of the blurred boundaries between the street, the block and the room to rethink the notion of home and domesticity. In our proposed intervention to create the ‘Subver-city’, we envisage the ‘Green Urban Lab’ acting as a threshold between private and public space: a means to offer alternative ways for Gaza residents to engage in ‘self-help’, hinting at possible alternative forms of reconstruction.

Yara Sharif and Nasser Golzari are practising architects at NG Architects and Senior Lecturers at the University of Westminster. Their current research by design has won the 2017 RIBA’s President Award for research (commendation).

An evening symposium celebrating the launch of The Social (Re)Production of Architecture co-edited by Doina Petrescu and Kim Trogal will take place on Thursday, 1st March.

The Social (Re)Production of Architecture brings the debates of the ‘right to the city’ into today’s context of ecological, economic and social crises. Building on the 1970s’ discussions about the ‘production of space’, which French sociologist Henri Lefebvre considered a civic right, the authors question who has the right to make space, and explore the kinds of relations that are produced in the process. In the emerging post-capitalist era, this book addresses urgent social and ecological imperatives for change and opens up questions around architecture’s engagement with new forms of organisation and practice. The book asks what (new) kinds of ‘social’ can architecture (re)produce, and what kinds of politics, values and actions are needed.
