ArCCAT Climate Action Week: Material ReUse Station Competition winner announced!

Following the completion of the week-long design Student Competition on the ‘Material ReUse Station’ as part of the Climate Action Week (24-29 October) Group 5: The Slice was announced the winner!

Congratulations to Julie Beech (BA Interor Architecture), Adam El Hafedi (BA Architecture), Zuzanna Jodlowska (BSc Architectural Technology) and Ruhan Zaman (BSc Architecture and Environmental Design)

Congratulations to the winners and all who participated. Big thank you to all the judges and course leaders Diony Kipraiou, Paolo Zaide, Stefania Boccaletti and Tabatha Mills who organised this cross-UG-course competition, first such initiative in the School.  

The next step will be collaboration with David Scott and the Fabrication Lab to work on building a prototype.

ArCCAT Climate Action Week: Launch of Design Competition for a material reuse station for the studios | Monday, October 25 at 13:00 in Studio, Marylebone Campus

For both students and architectural designers, the physical model is a manifestation of ideas. The act of physical model-making is central to architectural education and our studios. It presents the opportunity to test, explore, speculate, compose and further the design process. How can you as students begin to challenge wasteful practice? Can we make our studio practice more circular?

Five teams of 4 L5 students each, drawn from each of the undergraduate degrees (Interiors, Architecture, AED, Technology) will participate in this design challenge for a week.

A JURIED ONE-DAY DESIGN COMPETITION

£10 PER STUDENT

Teams of up to 8 and individuals can register. Individuals will be assigned a team on the day. Each team will be mentored by a practising architect.

The charrette is a CAD-free event. Drawn, modelled and collaged proposals only. Bring your favourite medium and tools with you. Rolls of tracing paper and drawing paper will be provided.

Entry fee includes lunch, refreshments and reprographic services throughout the day.

2nd and 3rd year architecture & interior design students only.

REGISTRATION CLOSES 6PM, 17 OCT 2019. LIMITED TO 80 STUDENTS.

International call for ideas to re-imagine Grosvenor Square in London_Deadline 26th October

Grosvenor Britain & Ireland has opened an international call for ideas to re-imagine Grosvenor Square in London.

We are calling on urban visionaries, whether individuals, groups or companies, to submit ideas – strategies, projects, experiments and solutions – to reinstate Grosvenor Square as one of London’s leading squares. The best ideas will form the detailed brief for a design competition next year in preparation for delivery.

We would love to hear from you.

An independent panel of experts convened by Grosvenor and chaired by Yana Peel, CEO, Serpentine Galleries, will oversee the call. The panel will offer challenge and insight to help us shape our thinking and select the ideas we wish to develop further.

Grosvenor Square should be a defining public space for London. However, from our research we know it has a low profile and that as a more welcoming and engaging space it would better reflect the capital’s character and appeal to a broader range of locals, visitors and Londoners.

Following our public polling last year, and with the return to Grosvenor of management responsibilities for the square, we see a chance to gather the best ideas from around the world.

London Festival of Architecture and Wandsworth Council Announce Competition for Public Realm Revival – Deadline (first stage submissions): 23rd February

The London Festival of Architecture (LFA) and Wandsworth Council have launched a competition to improve the appearance and feel of Thessaly Road Railway Bridge, and important gateway to the Nine Elms regeneration area near New Covent Garden Market. The competition, which is open to architects, designers, artists and students, is an opportunity to transform an ugly and unwelcoming underpass into an attractive and user-friendly route for pedestrians and cyclists, and a gateway to the redevelopment taking place around Nine Elms Vauxhall.

The design competition has been conceived by the LFA and Wandsworth Council to improve the user experience for pedestrians and cyclists on a key route between Battersea Park Road and Wandsworth Road, and to revitalise the public realm close to major new development taking place in Nine Elms Vauxhall. In keeping with the London Festival of Architecture’s mission to harness the talent of London’s architectural and creative community, the competition will bring fresh ideas to improve the built environment in this key location, and act as a valuable demonstration project for similar sites across London and elsewhere.

Following a shortlist of six practices to be announced in March, the winning team will be revealed in May and awarded £20,000 to develop a design that will be eligible to be constructed and installed as part of the London Festival of Architecture in 2019. The overall budget for the project is £200,000.

The deadline for first stage submissions is 23 February 2018.

The competition is being judged by an expert panel including:

London’s built environment is full of overlooked and unprepossessing spaces like Thessaly Road railway bridge, and this competition is a brilliant opportunity to show how thoughtful and imaginative design can transform the mundane into something quite special. At the London Festival of Architecture we are grateful to Wandsworth Council for providing this opportunity to showcase architectural and design excellence in London, and demonstrate the power of design in transforming London’s public realm.

The Leader of Wandsworth Council, Cllr Ravi Govindia, said:

We are delighted to be working with the London Festival of Architecture in finding an innovative solution to improving the bridge space in Thessaly Road and I am really looking forward to seeing the winning design. We have a long-standing association with the LFA and it’s good to be in partnership with them again on this project.

The Thessaly Road underpass is much used by people in the local area but I think it’s fair to say that it’s definitely in need of a facelift. This competition is a great opportunity to do just that and knowing the creative talent that is out there, I am sure we will find a design that will revitalise this key route through Nine Elms.

Arthur Mamou-Mani’s Galaxia Wins Burning Man 2018 Temple Design Competition

Yes, we have been a bit slow with this one, having to battle through all the Christmas turkey and minced pies, but what better way to celebrate the end the year than with yet another amazing achievement by Arthur Mamou-Mani and his beautiful design Galaxia for Burning Man 2018 Temple.

Galaxia celebrates hope in the unknown, stars, planets, black holes, the movement uniting us in swirling galaxies of dreams. A superior form of Gaia in Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, Galaxia is the ultimate network, the fabric of the universe connecting living beings into one entity.

Galaxia is shaped of 20 timber trusses converging as a spiral towards one point in the sky. The triangular trusses form different paths towards a central space holding a giant 3D printed mandala, the heart of Galaxia. The timber modules start large enough to hold small alcoves in which people can write in peace. As participants walk through the path, the timber modules lift up and become thinner and thinner towards the sky as people reach the central mandala.

Arthur Mamou-Mani is a MArch DS10 studio leader and tutor (alongside Toby Burgess) and the director of architecture practice Mamou-Mani Ltd. He is also a lecturer at the UCL-Bartlett and owns a digital fabrication laboratory called Fab.Pub.

In November he was selected as one of RIBA J’s Rising Stars for 2017.

Design Competition: One Day Design Challenge

The One Day Challenge competition is aimed at the young designers and architects under the age of 30, and on the 17th June the Roca London Gallery by Zaha Hadid Architects will host the first UK edition of the challenge.

Participants are invited to create a new design related to the bathroom space in less than 10 hours. The designs will be seen and judged by a prestigious jury of leading architects and designer, and the participants can win three prizes worth up to £2,000.
