In this lecture, Prof Sadie Morgan’s will chronicle major endeavours over her twenty-five year career, including a selection of projects and roles that have provided fertile testing ground for how design can work to authentically improve people’s lives.

Morgan will focus on the lessons learnt throughout – the power of collaborative design thinking and doing; the need for real social value; gender parity and diversity within the industry; the importance of listening and gathering knowledge; the importance of collective criticism; and the need for well-being and quality of life to become central to the built environment.

The inaugural lecture will also be webcast via Microsoft Teams, with a link shared with registered delegates as an Outlook invite on the day of the event.

In-person attendees are invited to join us for a drinks reception at the close of the lecture, to the event close.

The School of Architecture + Cities is hosting Shape To Fabrication 2023. This is the first time that the industry leading event has been hosted by a university. The conference sessions are co-moderated by Arthur Mamou Mani (MArch DS10 tutor).

Shape to Fabrication is an Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) and Design focused conference, presenting innovative real world projects going beyond the theoretical. Focus is on proven application and evidence based project delivery.

Presenters at the conference represent an international field of Architects, Engineers, Designers, Fabricators and Software Developers, all working at the cutting-edge of their industries within AEC and Design.

The 8th iteration of Shape to Fabrication is presented in partnership with the School of Architecture and Cities, University of Westminster, and the 2-day conference takes place at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone Campus, London, on the 26th & 27th April 2023.

V&A: Make Good Symposium 2023 | Wednesday, March 1, 2023, 11:00-17:30 (GMT) at V&A South Kensington

For the second Make Good symposium the V&A brings together international speakers from a wide range of disciplines, spanning science, design, architecture and forestry to look at the opportunities and challenges of sourcing and making with natural, renewable and local materials, in particular wood. As such it takes a cue from the Field Notes Summer School, which was a collaboration between the environmental charity Sylva Foundation and the V&A. This day of talks and conversations, presenting ongoing projects and research, forms a collection of field notes to inform and inspire future initiatives in sustainable design and manufacture.

CALL Summary:

2023 marks the twentieth anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Heritage. That event came three decades after the World Heritage Convention. Through that, UNESCO had set up its World Heritage List of protected sites and buildings. The intervening years have seen multiple shifts in how we define heritage – as both material objects and social traditions. Today more than ever before, the distinction is blurred. The streets on which we live, the edifices we design and the monuments we protect are all connected to the lifestyles, traditions and social groupings we celebrate and safeguard.

What we mean by heritage today then, is an open and diverse question. Our buildings and environments, our cities and neighborhoods, our memorials and our artworks, our cultures and communities are all component parts of what we understand as ‘preservable’ history.

However, the past and the present also overlap and mutually support in this expanded definition. Placemaking sees built and cultural heritage as key to urban practice. Contextualization is central to planning laws. Museums are site for communities and display. Heritage organizations preserve buildings and educate the public. Galleries present historical art while debating meanings in contemporary terms.

This conference seeks to open debate on these changing, complex and at times contradictory definitions of heritage.

How does one educate a professional – an architect, a doctor? Competencies are one thing, but what about qualities such as ethics, or duty of care? Is a key skill of being an architect or a clinician the ability to listen to a variety of stakeholders and work collaboratively?

Practices of Care bring together a panel of architects and doctors, to discuss what it might mean to be a caring professional and what the two disciplines can learn from each other.

The event is part of the London Festival of Architecture.

Climate Demonstrator: Live build summer school at Westminster | Open to all University of Westminster students | June 14 – 25, 2021

We are pleased to announce the launch of Climate Demonstrator: a live build summer for Westminster students in collaboration with St John the Divine School Kennington.

Be part of a two-week live build summer from 14th to 25th June. Work as part of team to design and fabricate an exciting, interactive playground installation that demonstrates the science of buildings and their interaction with climate and biodiversity. The summer school is open to all Westminster students.

What’s the challenge?

To design and fabricate an exciting interactive playground installation that demonstrates the science of buildings and their interaction with climate and biodiversity.

Who can take part?

The project is open to all students at University of Westminster.

How will I be involved and what will I be doing?

You will be assigned to a team to work with students of other courses and levels. The first stage will be an intensive one-day design charrette or workshop to develop a final design and make a concept model. The models will be taken to the school for discussion and debate. The next stage will be to produce fabrication drawings leading to construction of the final work. The installations will be taken to the school for a day of interaction and exhibition with schoolchildren and for display as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

When will it take place?

The summer school will be held for two weeks from 14th to 25th June, culminating in an exhibition on the last day in the ground of St. John’s School. Everything will be happening on campus and on site so you’ll need to be in London and available to contribute during two weeks.

What will I get out of it?

Constructive fun! After over a year of isolated working this is chance to celebrate a return to face-to-face life and interactive hands-on making. Work with students from other disciplines and levels. Develop organisational and project management skills. Make contact with architects, stakeholders and the schools community. The event is part of the London Festival of Architecture so your work will be on public exhibition.

Call for submissions: LFA and Network Rail announce design competition for train station benches_Deadline, November 11, 12:00pm

LFA and Network Rail (NR) have announced ‘Sitting Pretty’ – an open call for new ideas for seating for the capital’s mainline train stations, to be installed next spring ahead of the London Festival of Architecture 2020.

As the Festival strives to promote positive change in our everyday open spaces, this design competition seeks an engaging new solution to transform station seating, and to brighten the experience of London’s stations for Londoners, commuters and visitors alike. Architecture and design students, recent graduates and emerging practitioners are invited to submit proposals that showcase a creative vision for these seating provisions and can inform a prototype for how a future of station seating might look.

I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals: I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object. (Roland Barthes, 1957)

This two-day conference will explore old, new and future interconnections between Design History and Architectural History. It will address the disciplines’ shared historiography, theory, forms of analysis and objects of critical enquiry, and draw attention to how recent developments in the one can have significant implications for the other. It will attend to areas of difference, in order, ultimately to identify new areas for discussion and set future agendas for research between the disciplines.

Open Call: “The Digital X Workshop” by Norman Foster Foundation; Deadline: 4th of November

The Norman Foster Foundation is awarding ten scholarships to participate in the upcoming Digital X workshop to be held at the Norman Foster Foundation headquarters in Madrid, Spain, 18–22 February 2019.

The Digital X workshop, mentored by Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder and former director of MIT Media Lab, will comprise a team of granted scholars drawn from the diverse backgrounds of the digital world, design and architecture.

What happens when the natural world and the artificial world become one and the same? What societal and anthropological changes are triggered when direct brain communications occur among humans, and between humans and machines? The Digital X workshop will focus on this kinship, that of architecture and the digital world, how the two play together now, and how they will change the world together, going forward, discussing things that, outrageous today, will be commonplace tomorrow.

Grants will cover all transportation, accommodation and meals related to the week-long event in Madrid. Scholars will engage with an interdisciplinary Academic Body formed by mentors ranging from the fields of electronics and software engineering to social sciences and art.
