Open Studio is an interactive project run by the School of Architecture + Cities at the University of Westminster to make its design, research and practice-based work available online while it is happening. The site acts as a real time teaching and learning environment in which the work of both students and staff is curated and documented – the work of its design studios, or its other teaching and research groups and workshops. The first Architecture + Cities Research Seminar of the new semester will take place on Monday, January 29 from 13:00 to 14:00 (GMT), online. It will be given by Scott Batty on the construction as an essential component of architectural education.

According to Dr Rosa Schiano-Phan: “the report provides a toolkit for organisations to increase and improve the presence of women in construction, so it is set to have a high impact. However, it also highlights significant shortfalls in data on the presence and impact of Women In Construction in Europe and a slow progress compared to a similar study by Professor Linda Clarke 20 years ago. We are preparing a journal article on the study and will organise an event later in the semester to launch the report in the UK. We are also currently searching for appropriate research calls for possible bids.”
The report investigates women’s experience in the construction, wood and forestry industry based on a survey sent out by the EFBWW, the research partner on this project, to 77 Unions representing the industry across Europe. The survey focuses on the obstacles women in the field face and what solutions are needed to increase recruitment and retention. It is authored by Dr Guedes, a Research Associate at Westminster, and co-authored by ProBE’s co-directors Dr Rosa Schiano-Phan, Dr Maria Christina Georgiadou, Professor Linda Clarke and Dr Fernando Duran Palma.
The project began earlier in 2023 when the ProBE team successfully answered the call put out by the EFBWW and funded by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), to analyse the survey data and produce a report.
The presentation in Helsinki was split into three sections, first introducing the report, secondly offering practical recommendations based on the survey results and finally highlighting what stood out the most from what they found. […]

The School of Architecture + Cities is hosting Shape To Fabrication 2023. This is the first time that the industry leading event has been hosted by a university. The conference sessions are co-moderated by Arthur Mamou Mani (MArch DS10 tutor).
Shape to Fabrication is an Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) and Design focused conference, presenting innovative real world projects going beyond the theoretical. Focus is on proven application and evidence based project delivery.
Presenters at the conference represent an international field of Architects, Engineers, Designers, Fabricators and Software Developers, all working at the cutting-edge of their industries within AEC and Design.
The 8th iteration of Shape to Fabrication is presented in partnership with the School of Architecture and Cities, University of Westminster, and the 2-day conference takes place at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone Campus, London, on the 26th & 27th April 2023.

Are you interested in construction and making?
Please come on Tuesday, 8th of June between 10.30am and 2pm, and have some fun taking apart the Woven Pavilion at the rear podium at the Marylebone Campus and learn about the construction process. After revarnishing and making good off-site some of the QHT funded arches it will be reassembled at Harrow Campus.

During the Gothic period, Leonardo Fibonacci of Pisa (1180-1240) established the foundations of theoretical geometry. Back then, the masters of building were architects, artists and engineers at the same time. Geometry strongly influenced their artistic work. Unfortunately, little is passed down about their knowledge, because the architects did not write.
The Gothic period stands figuratively for the complexity of architecture and its research culture. Architecture refers to many participating disciplines such as construction, materials sciences, building physics, sociology, fabrication technology, computer science, geometry, arts, architectural history and theory. It is significant, that these disciplines are interlinked in planning, design and realization processes of architecture. Compared to other sciences this is certainly one of the reasons why the development of a research culture in architecture is more difficult.
The international conference aims to discuss topics and methods in architectural research, focusing on their cross-disciplinary interrelations and their relevance to the design process itself. We are interested to see approaches to the development of a research culture in architecture. This conference will identify research topics and methods, encourages a research discourse and provides impulses especially for young researchers.
The cross-disciplinary interrelations will be debated through invited keynote lectures, as well as presentations of papers and posters, which have been accepted by our scientific committee. The invited experts from academia and practice will showcase pioneering projects and developments from various fields of architectural research. Additionally, the topics will be discussed at round tables.

The scientific committee will evaluate submitted abstracts based on the originality of the topic, the clarity of the used research methods and the presentation, under consideration of the diverse research aspects.
Abstracts will be accepted either for presentation in the form of a 15-minute talk, or a poster on display for the duration of the conference. All accepted abstracts (talks and posters) will be distributed in a booklet during the conference. A limited number of the accepted abstracts will be invited to develop their work into full research papers for publication in a book after the conference.

The Faculty has run the Constructionarium for Construction students for the past 10 years – with great success.
The Constructionarium offers Year 2+ students a week at the CITB HQ in Norfolk building scale models of various structures, and is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands on experience of managing and constructing a real construction project, and will allow you to demonstrate valuable site experience on your CV.
Roles undertaken by the students include project management and planning, setting out, carpentry, steelwork and laying concrete.
This year the Constructionarium will be open to Architecture students!
The Constructionarium will run from Sunday 20 – Friday 25 May.
The cost will be capped at £75 per student and for this you will get transport, accommodation, and 3 meals a day.
