Call for submissions: Archisource – Drawing of the Year Awards 2024 | Deadline: Sunday, March 17, 2024

“Archisource presents the Drawing of the Year Awards 2024 – the fifth annual, creative imagery Awards – open to all and free to enter! The Awards are the ultimate accolade in visual representations across architecture and design, celebrating the very best imagery created by students and professionals around the world, receiving thousands of entries every year. There is over £100,000 GBP ($127,000 USD) worth of prizes to be won, with the top 250 entries receiving a free Affinity V2 Universal Licence!

2024 marks the fifth year of the aspirational Awards which recognise excellence in image creation, celebrating the diverse visual creations across all styles, typologies and functions. The Awards are open to all disciplines and can be created in any medium or style. Submissions must convey architecture, design or the built environment.

The Drawing of the Year 2024 is brought to you in partnership with Affinity, the award-winning graphic design, image editing and page layout software used by architects and designers around the world. The top 250 entries will receive a free Affinity V2 Universal Licence including Affinity Designer 2, Affinity Photo 2 and Affinity Publisher 2 for Mac, iPad and Windows PC worth £159.99 GBP ($200 USD).

The widely recognised aspirational Awards series celebrates those that have truly excelled in creating standout drawings and imagery. There are six major award categories, focusing on the array of creative processes: the Drawing of the Year Award, Digital Drafting Award supported by Bentley’s MicroStation, Digital Media Award, Hand Drawn Award supported by LEUCHTTURM1917, Mixed Media Award and Visualisation Award supported by Chaos. The Awards are also supported by Vectorworks, Tala Lighting and reMarkable.

With over £100,000 GBP ($127,000 USD) worth of prizes to be won this is one of the biggest prize collections out there! The six Award category winners will win the ultimate studio set up worth up to £12,500 each – including a huge array of software licences, creative tools and studio essentials that every creative needs. In addition the shortlisted entrants will all receive the opportunity to be internationally published by Archisource on their global channels and publications.

Archisource invites students, graduates and alumni to submit their drawings into our free to enter, Drawing of the Year 2022 competition.

The competition has £30,000 worth of prizes to be won, significant international publication and all entries will receive Affinity V2 Universal Licence for free which includes all of Affinity’s creative apps!

In 2021, School of Architecture + Cities student Jake Cripwell was awarded Highly Commended Award in the Environmental category at the Drawing of the Year competition for his drawing titled ‘The Creeping Seaweed Gardens, Fish’s-Eye View’.

Asian Architects Association announces photography competition | Deadline: Thursday, January 13, 2022

AAA are excited to be launching their first ever photography competition, which is free to enter and open to all.

AAA would love to have participants from all backgrounds (don’t have to be Asians only) participate in this exciting creative opportunity.  

The theme of the competition is ‘’Joy in Architecture’’ (which doesn’t have to be about Asian culture but could be a wider interpretation).

The pandemic has highlighted the importance of how we live, work and interact with one another; with the use of photography enabling us to relive memories and feel connected but most importantly capturing those special moments.

As we continue to adapt to the new normal, let us celebrate the joy that architecture brings to our daily lives.

AAA are interested to see what joy in Architecture means to you. It could be about buildings, people or capturing moments of the everyday; we are open to all interpretations of the theme.

ArCCAT Climate Action Week: Material ReUse Station Competition winner announced!

Following the completion of the week-long design Student Competition on the ‘Material ReUse Station’ as part of the Climate Action Week (24-29 October) Group 5: The Slice was announced the winner!

Congratulations to Julie Beech (BA Interor Architecture), Adam El Hafedi (BA Architecture), Zuzanna Jodlowska (BSc Architectural Technology) and Ruhan Zaman (BSc Architecture and Environmental Design)

Congratulations to the winners and all who participated. Big thank you to all the judges and course leaders Diony Kipraiou, Paolo Zaide, Stefania Boccaletti and Tabatha Mills who organised this cross-UG-course competition, first such initiative in the School.  

The next step will be collaboration with David Scott and the Fabrication Lab to work on building a prototype.

LUMIES: film making competition | Deadline: Saturday, June 5, 2021

Drawing Matter – Call for Entries: Writing Prize 2021 | Deadline: Midnight (BST) on Tuesday, June 1, 2021

The Drawing Matter Trust is pleased to announce the return of the Drawing Matter Writing Prize. The competition invites participants to carefully look at drawings and to consider what they reveal about the process of design, and the buildings or objects they represent.

We take the word ‘drawing’ to be as much a verb as a noun, and a shorthand for describing any process of design with a purpose – a building or an object – for which it is being made. The drawing itself may be something other than paper and pencil, a plan or section; it may encompass a sequence or series (such as a sketchbook), or a broad range of techniques, such as collage, photography, models, paintings and, of course, digital media.

Last year’s competition attracted a large number of thoughtful texts by participants based all over the world. Read the prize-winning entries here.

The 2021 Competition

This year, the competition is divided into two categories: Autograph and Archive. Participants are invited to enter either or both categories and should submit one text of up to 1500 words per category.

Category 1: Autograph

Autograph offers the opportunity for writers to reflect on a drawing – or drawings – that they have made themselves. The focus of the text might be on the author’s use of particular techniques and materials (analogue, digital, or anything in-between), or a drawing type or representational mode that they have developed personally and has become a key part of their design process.

Category 2: Archive

This category asks for texts on contemporary and historical drawings held in the Drawing Matter collection and other drawings collections and archives. In these essays participants should focus on the objects themselves and their meaning, balancing considerations of the process of making drawings, context, and the relationships between drawings and buildings – both built and unbuilt.

Prizes

Each category has a ‘general award’ and ‘student award’ sub-category. Participants should indicate on their entry form which award they are entering. Entrants to the student prize will be either currently studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. PhD research students should enter the general award.

The competition winners, and other participants with outstanding entries, will be invited to publish their texts on Drawing Matter’s website.

Judges

Prof. Adrian Forty and Prof. Briony Fer will be judging the 2021 competition, with support from the Drawing Matter editorial team. We are pleased to be working with two very distinguished scholars whose own writing and interests overlap so closely with our own.

The Writing Prize competition is open to anyone aged over 18, with or without a background in architecture or design. We welcome a broad range of approaches towards writing, and voices from art and architectural history, the sciences and humanities, alongside practitioners – architects, designers, artists and writers.

London Festival of Architecture: City of London School Competition | Deadline [first stage]: Midday, Friday, December 18, 2020

At the LFA, our competitions are an important part of our mission to democratise the discussion around architecture. Now, we’re pleased that our Collaboration team will be also running competitions as New London Architecture to build upon this, expanding with a joint competitions programme and a wider range of opportunities for our friends and supporters to get involved in.

London Festival of Architecture

New London Architecture (NLA) and the City of London Corporation have launched a new open call competition to find a design team to take forward a major redevelopment programme at City of London School. The competition is a unique opportunity to transform one of London’s most prestigious schools, on one of the most prominent sites in the City of London. 

The open call competition is open to architecture practices all shapes and sizes, including teams of smaller and medium-sized practices who are being actively encouraged to join together to bid for the project, which has an estimated project cost of £19 million.
 
City of London School was founded in the fifteenth century and is one of London’s leading day schools. The school’s current building – on the City of London riverfront beside the Millennium Bridge – dates from 1986 and is one of the City’s most recognisable buildings. Facilities have changed little since then, however, and development is now essential to accommodate increased pupil numbers and to allow City of London School to grow and thrive. 
 
A masterplan completed in 2019 identified a range of new facilities to be delivered over a series of phases, and work is now under way on an initial phase to provide improved sports and dining facilities. The City Corporation and the School are now working with NLA to find the design team that deliver subsequent phases, and in doing to maximising the use of the School’s site and delivering multi-use spaces and classrooms which are flexible, inviting and inspiring. In particular the masterplan has identified the following elements for delivery:

  • A new courtyard building located on the existing playground, providing around 1,200 sq.m of classroom and office space;
  • Improving circulation and access around the playground and the wider school campus;
  • Refurbishing part of the main school building to provide improved Junior School accommodation;
  • Extending the main school building to enhance science teaching facilities;
  • Refurbishing and remodelling existing space to create a new sixth form centre and common room, administrative and pastoral facilities, alongside sports changing facilities;
  • Reconfiguring the design technology and computing building;
  • Opening up and enlarging circulation space within the main school building.

The winning team will be one that can help City of London School become a flagship in renewable energy use and greening, and to promote environmental consciousness across the school and the City of London. The design team will be required to consult with multiple stakeholders, and to execute a well-planned programme of works that meets the School’s timetabling requirements and allows the school to remain on site with minimal disruption. 
 
The deadline for the first stage of the competition – requiring teams to complete prepare and expression of interest and complete a selection questionnaire – is midday on Friday 18 December 2020. Up to six shortlisted teams will then be invited to develop a design concept for the project and awarded an honorarium of £1,000. It is expected that a winning design team will be identified in March 2021.

Christmas Competition and other updates from the Fabrication Laboratory

As we get close to the Christmas Break, we have some updates from the Fabrication Lab, as well as the launch of a short Christmas Competition for our staff and our students.

Twelve Days of Christmas Window and Competition

Fabrication Laboratory is doing what they can to spread some seasonal good will at the end of an extraordinarily difficult year, and are creating a festive window on Marylebone Road. They’re going to use the Lab’s robot arm to film a one-off interpretation of the Twelve Days of Christmas, and are inviting ideas for scenes representing one of the 12 gifts. They’re looking for proposals this week – sketches or sketch models – and we’ll shortlist the best 12 next Tuesday to turn into animated sets for the window and film.

They’re running the project in collaboration with the Baker Street Quarter Partnership, who have brought generous local sponsors and cash prizes for the best three entries – £250 first prize, £150 second, £50 third. The window will open and the film will premiere the day before the students return home, Tuesday 8th December at 18:00.

Opening Times

The Lab remains open as it has since the start of the semester, and is available for bookable activities including use of the lasers and CNC machines. The shop, now converted to Click and Collect, is working well and is well used. It will be open for students until the end of the week when onsite teaching ends, and will reopen from the beginning of January. This information is also available on the website.

Lab Improvements

While the Fabrication Laboratory has had fewer students this year, they’ve taken the opportunity to make a whole host of improvements. Unfortunately, most of these will not be available until they are able to open up more fully, post lockdown.
