Tszwai So takes part in Architecture on Stage : New Architects | Thursday, December 9, 19:00-21:00 (GMT) at the Barbican

In the second of two special evenings, Architecture on Stage presents four of Britain’s best emerging practices.

One of these is Spheron, founded by Tszwai So (Lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities ) and Samuel Bentil-Mensah. Spheron has a particularly rich portfolio of community projects including the Belarusian Memorial Chapel (featured image), which it completed in 2017.  This new build wooden chapel was commissioned by the Holy See of Rome for the Belarusian Diaspora Community in London to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Half-day Symposium: “Blueprint for Decolonisation” – Asian Architects Association in collaboration with Architecture Foundation | Tuesday, March 30, from 14:00 to 17:00 (GMT)

The racialisation of space has its roots in colonial practices that sought to wield control over people perceived as ‘Other’. If the future of practice begins with education, how has the practice of ‘othering’ become absorbed into the structure of education?

Join us for a half-day symposium in collaboration with the recently established Asian Architects Association (AAA) exploring the steps towards a decolonised architectural education. Chaired by AAA co-founder Karl Mok, the discussion will seek to propose a blueprint for the future of architectural education, with panelists and students alike sharing their thoughts and experiences. Karl is joined by Dr Kamna Patel, Associate Professor at the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, Ming Cheng, tutor at the London School of Architecture, Sanaa Shaikh, tutor at Oxford Brookes and director of Native Studio, Khensani de Klerk, founder of Matri-Archi(tecture) and researcher at Cambridge, and Shumi Bose, Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins.

The symposium invites an open dialogue with those who have felt oppressed now or in the past by traditional architectural curriculm.

Asian Architects Association (AAA) is an emerging forum that promotes, examines and debates the work of asian architects. The AAA was founded by Sumita Singha, Tumpa Husna Yasmin Fellows, Ming Cheng, Vinesh Pomal and Karl Mok.

FAME will be hosting their first event to expose the barriers female architects of minority ethnic face in the architecture industry today

About this Event

FAME: Female Architects of Minority Ethnic: founded by Tumpa Husna Yasmin Fellows and Tahin Khan.

FAME Collective is a research-based network founded to support women of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities in architecture and the built environment. Their aim is to raise awareness of the barriers, inequality and lack of diversity in architecture and to demand change that responds to our collective challenges. This event is part of a series of events which will be documented and shared with those in power to change and address the inequality that exists in architecture.

Join us for the launch of FAME’s first symposium ‘EXPOSING THE BARRIERS IN ARCHITECTURE’ hosted by Architecture Foundation via Zoom, and presented by Tumpa Husna Yasmin Fellows. Our distinguished keynote speaker Sumita Singha (recent RIBA Presidential candidate). Our panel of speakers include Annette Fisher (from Let’s BUild), Hilary Satchwell (from Tibbalds and Part W), Femi Oresanya (from HOK and the Chair of the RIBA Architects for Change Expert Advisory Group) and Anna Liu (Director of Tonkin Liu, won the 2018 Stephen Lawrence Prize for Old Shed New House).

This is a participatory event to explore the impact of racism, injustice and inequality contributing to the barriers in architecture. We want to hear about the lived experiences of practitioners, academics and students from BAME backgrounds, to unpack the grievances.

FAME is responding to an urgent need for understanding how race and gender affects established practitioners, young scholars and students, from diverse backgrounds, knowledge and practices by engaging in conversations about the barriers in architecture and the built environment. Our aim is to collectively respond and to demand change and the much-needed support to overcome barriers of racial and gender inequality both in academia and in practices. Our Q + A and participatory sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to share experiences of racial and gender inequality in architecture and the built environment.

This event is being hosted by the Architecture Foundation via Zoom.

The University of Westminster and Westminster Architecture Society, in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation, invites all architecture students and recent graduates to the second edition of the Megacrit and inter-uni MegaParty!

MEGACRIT 10am-5pm

This year’s Megacrit asks the question: “Who has the right to the city?” and explores the theme of Architecture and Power.

Students will present throughout the day, exchanging ideas and engaging in a discussion with guest critics and visiting tutors from around the capital.

After presenting, students will exhibit their work around the space creating an inter-uni architectural exhibition of work for all to view! All students from any university and recent graduates are invited to come and watch the crits throughout the day, please sign up for a FREE ticket through eventbrite to confirm your attendance.

Last year, the Westminster Megacrit was a great success with 7 units, 40 students and 14 guest critics participating. With over 1700 people signing up for the event, it became one of the largest Megacrits hosted in London. We hope to have as much fun this year, and look forward to seeing you all there!

Architecture on Stage is a series of talks by the world’s best architects programmed by the Architecture Foundation in partnership with the Barbican Centre.

Alessandra Cianchetta is an architect and founding partner of AWP, an architecture practice based in Paris and London.

Born in Italy, Cianchetta studied architecture at La Sapienza in Rome, ETSA Madrid and ETSA Barcelona, before setting up AWP in 2008.

Her recent projects include Poissy Galore, a museum and observatory (pictured) which is part of a 113 hectare park on the Seine near Paris; the masterplan for Paris-La Défense, a grand-scale public realm project; and an arts district in Liverpool.

Cianchetta has taught architecture and urban design at Cornell University, University of Virginia, Columbia University and The Berlage.

Alessandra Cianchetta currently runs MArch Design Studio 24 alongside Juan Piñol at the School of Architecture + Cities, University of Westminster.

What will urban planning be like in 2052? This one-day conference brings together policy makers, researchers and practitioners to envisage the role of urban planning in the future.

Planning for the profound political and social shifts that the future requires can feel intractable and overwhelming. Everyday realities makes it difficult to look beyond the rhythm of political cycles and yet it is critical that we do.

By brokering relationships between artists, creative practitioners and policy makers and extrapolating from bold urban planning initiatives, we will collectively engender a hopeful and practical conversation about the future role of policy in tomorrow’s economy.

The Problems and Possibilities of Planning: David Chipperfield in Conversation with Simon Kretz_Friday, January 25, 19:00 at the Rich Mix

British architect David Chipperfield and Swiss urbanist Simon Kretz will explore how planning shapes the city.

In 2016, acclaimed British architect David Chipperfield and the Swiss urbanist and researcher Simon Kretz began working together for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. Together with 36 ETH students, they conducted an extensive study of one of London’s large and controversial development areas, the Bishopsgate Goodsyard. Through applying alternative design and planning processes to the East London site, the students created nine different projects under the guidance of Kretz.

Last year, Chipperfield and Kretz published a book to reflect on their research and the problems and possibilities of the planning system titled, On Planning – A Thought Experiment.

The book explores the wider conditions under which an ideal urban development project could flourish. Their conclusions consider how future large-scale developments elsewhere could have a more positive urban impact, both at the scale of the neighbourhood and wider metropolis.

This discussion concludes Planning 2052, a major day-long conference exploring the future of the planning system. It acts as the final session of the day and is ticketed separately.
