Cecil Balmond, March 5th
Cecil Balmond will be visiting DS 15 on March 5th to look at our last semester’s work on architecture and geometry. He is the deputy chair of Arups, founded the Advanced Geometry Unit, engineered virtually every really ambitious building you’ve seen recently– from pretty much everything by Rem Koolhaas, to Alvaro Siza, Toyo Ito, Daniel Libeskind and all the Serpentine Pavillions. He’s giving us half a day of his incredibly valuable time from 9.30-2.
We’ll be running the session in four groups, each lasting about an hour. The students have just finished a project involving patternmaking and the design of a pavillion, and have now designed a masterplan for redesigning the L1 shopping Centre in Liverpoool. We’ll be asking the students to select and present their best work from last semester’s just-finished project, and to discuss how they might hope to develop it in their new project within the masterplan.
The pin-ups will be held in the 4th floor studio at the University of Westminster, 35 Marylebone Road (opposite Madame Tussauds), starting outside my office in the two nearest pin up spaces and also in rooms M412 and M414 We will start at 9.30am and run till 2.
