Just Streets
Funded by Road Safety Trust
Just Streets is a multi-stakeholder international project funded by Horizon Europe, which will run from January 2024 to June 2027. The project focuses on (re)developing streets shaped by active mobility that are sustainable, safe, inclusive and just for all citizens. The project rationale is rooted in the idea that a shift from streets for the primary or exclusive use of cars towards street space for more active modes of mobility must be led by prioritising the needs and visions of all, particularly those social groups that have been traditionally under-represented in urban planning and design processes. This includes, in particular, women, children, the elderly, migrants, LGBTQI+ individuals, and people with disabilities or special mobility needs.
The project also considers justice and inclusivity in street planning and design, making it complementary to ambitions to foster resilient communities with the primary objective of supporting neighbourhoods and cities to reach their climate neutrality goals. As such, the project is aligned with the goals of the EU Mission Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.β
Just Streets brings together a consortium of 32 partners spanning academia, the public and private sectors, with research and knowledge transfer expertise, technology and service providers, organisations, and forward-thinking public authorities. Throughout the project, 11 cities will be supported with implementing innovative interventions and transforming their streets into just, equitable and people-centred spaces for active mobility, with broader goals to catalyse systemic transformation in urban public space planning and design. Subsequently, critical learnings and knowledge will be shared with other cities across Europe.βhe cities involved in the project include Amsterdam, Braga, Cugir, Haifa, Kozani, London, Milan, Riga, Vilnius, Vratsa and Zaragoza.
